Development Surveyor
As a Development Surveyor at Hill, you will be responsible for managing a portfolio of land-led projects through the early stages of development — from acquisition to the successful procurement of detailed planning consents. You’ll play a key role in supporting the delivery of our business plan by overseeing legal, technical, and planning due diligence, while ensuring schemes progress in line with agreed programmes and design ambitions.
You’ll work closely with internal departments, consultants, and local authorities to help shape projects that are commercially viable, planning-compliant, and aligned with Hill’s long-term development goals.
Key Responsibilities
- Monitor and report on the progress of planning applications, ensuring delivery aligns with the wider business plan.
- Review and coordinate supporting documentation to ensure all planning submissions meet the appropriate technical and design standards.
- Manage the preparation of cash flow viabilities and financial appraisals, and assess commercial risks and opportunities.
- Ensure due diligence activities are recorded and documented appropriately, with input from legal, commercial, and technical teams.
- Maintain compliance with Hill procedures and contribute to the ongoing enhancement of internal systems and reporting tools.
- Work in close collaboration with internal departments including Land, Technical, Sales, and Planning to align planning strategies and share key information.
- Contribute to affordable housing disposal strategy and ensure long-term management provisions are built into scheme designs.
Technical duties
- Manage project planning strategies and coordinate consultant input to support planning applications and appeals.
- Support the legal, technical, and planning due diligence process for land acquisitions and strategic land promotions.
- Oversee consultant teams during the pre-planning phase, ensuring work is delivered to the required quality and timeline.
- Prepare detailed planning programmes and update key dates across multiple workstreams (acquisition, planning, handover).
- Contribute to site layout reviews, design evaluations and sustainable design discussions to align outputs with Hill standards.
- Produce and review reports and appraisals, ensuring they are clear, accurate, and appropriate for their intended audience.
- Represent Hill in meetings with landowners, local authorities, agents, and consultants in a professional and informed manner.
